350 PHAR LAP PRINT BY RICHARD STONE REEVES! Very scarce "Artist's Proof" by Richard Stone Reeves, published in 1984 by the Newmarket Gallery, signed by Mr. Reeves and also by Tommy Woodcock who was PHAR LAP'S groom and trainer in the U.S! It shows PHAR LAP with jockey Jim Pike up, in a conformation pose at the track as they appeared in 1931. The prints were produced on heavy French art paper in 16 colors, by the famous Triton Press! This painting was done at the request of Tommy Woodcock, and the print edition was then made, and Mr. Reeves flew the entire edition over to Australia for Tommy to sign on his death bed. Tommy died two weeks later after signing all 850 prints. Mr Reeves passed away in October of 2005. He is considered the leading artist of famous race horses of all time and had been commissioned to paint more famous race horses than any artist in history. The print has the A/P designation in pencil to indicate "Artist's Proof", measures 22 1/4 X 27 1/2 , perfect condition, never displayed or mounted, stored in acid free packaging since purchase. There were 850 prints in the edition, of which half were sold in Australia, making this quite scarce in the U.S. PHAR LAP will always be remembered for his mysterious death in California in 1932 following his Agua Caliente Handicap which he won easily by two lengths in the record time of 2:02 4/5, cutting 1/5 second from the previous track record! In his 51 races, he won 37 including the 1930 Melbourne Cup under 138 pounds! The following year he carried a mind boggling 150 pounds in the same race!
